A lightweight, free TeamViewer alternative
If you mostly need to see and control another Windows PC or Mac, EnDesk does exactly that, without an account, a licence or a busy interface.
TeamViewer is one of the best-known names in remote access, built for everything from personal help to large IT teams. Many people use only a small part of it: helping a family member, reaching their home computer from the office, or supporting a few colleagues. For that, a smaller tool can be easier to live with.
Who EnDesk suits
- Families and friends. Help someone on a Mac or PC: they read you an ID and a password, they click Accept, you take over.
- Small offices. Free for work use, so there’s no licence to manage for occasional support.
- Your own computers. Unattended access with a permanent password reaches your office or home computer any time.
- Mixed Windows and Mac setups. Control either from the other, with ⌘ and Ctrl mapped so shortcuts behave.
How EnDesk works
Every computer running EnDesk shows a 9-digit ID and a password. Enter them on another computer and the person on the other side approves the connection. The screen and the input then travel directly between the two computers, encrypted end to end. EnDesk’s server only introduces the two computers; when a network blocks a direct connection, an encrypted relay carries the data without being able to read it.
Honest limits
EnDesk is deliberately small. Today it doesn’t offer file transfer, clipboard sync, phone or Linux apps, multi-monitor switching, remote audio, chat, session recording, or device management for IT teams. If those matter to you, a full suite remains the better fit.
Get started
- Download EnDesk on both computers. Both need EnDesk; it can’t connect to TeamViewer.
- On a Mac that will be controlled, allow Screen Recording and Accessibility once. See how to control a Mac from Windows.
- Enter the other computer’s ID and password under Connect.
